M4's early history mirrors that of M3 , however upon conversion in 1979 M4 was sent to become the Rotherham district tow wagon based, initially, at Rawmarsh Road depot but moving to the newly built depot at Midland Road in September 1982. M4 remianed allocated there untill withdrawl in early 1999 when Mainline (as SYT had become) decided to dispose of it.

After some negotiation a price was agreed and the M3 Preservation Group took over ownership in March 1999. She was collected on the 20th of March and moved to the St.Helens Transport Museum.

Since purchase M4 has had a lot of mechanical work done on it, initially the fuel pump and compressor to sort out its poor running and bad oil leak. Subsequently the clutch has been changed, followed by a complete new exhaust system made and fitted, and latterly all the brakes, wheels, hubs and wheel bearings have been overhauled. The body is preserved in as withdrawn condition, as a contrast to our totally overhauled tow wagon M3,  and the vehicle is available to perform recoveries should the group need to use it.
